Every season of marriage is different.
There are seasons when your spouse needs encouragement. Seasons when they need more affection, more patience, more quality time, more help, more prayer, or simply more reassurance that they are not carrying everything alone.
The challenge is that we often assume we already know what our spouse needs.
But people change. Circumstances change. Responsibilities change. And sometimes, what your spouse needed from you a year ago isn't what they need from you today.
That's why one simple question can open the door to a much deeper connection:
“What is something you need more of from me in this season?”
Don't ask the question while preparing your defense. Ask it with a heart ready to listen.
Your spouse may give you an answer you expected. Or they may surprise you.
Maybe they need more quality time because life has become overwhelming. Maybe they need more words of affirmation because they've been questioning themselves. Maybe they need practical help because they're exhausted. Maybe they simply need to feel pursued again.
Whatever their answer is, resist the urge to immediately explain why you haven't been doing it.
Listen.
Because sometimes loving your spouse well isn't about doing something extraordinary. It's about becoming aware of what their heart needs right now.
A Christ-centered marriage requires intentionality. We are called to love, serve, forgive, encourage, and care for one another—not only when it's convenient, but especially when life gets demanding.
So tonight, put the phones down. Slow down. Look at your spouse and ask:
“What is something you need more of from me in this season?”
Then listen.
You might discover that the answer you've been looking for isn't complicated.
Your spouse may simply be waiting to know that you still see them, hear them, and choose them.
