Prayer in marriage can sometimes feel intimidating.
Maybe one of you is more comfortable praying out loud. Maybe you struggle to find the right words. Maybe you've tried praying together and it felt awkward. Or perhaps life has simply become so busy that prayer keeps getting pushed to tomorrow.
But prayer doesn't have to be complicated to be meaningful.
You don't need a long prayer filled with impressive words.
You don't need to sound like a pastor.
You don't need to have everything figured out.
Sometimes the most powerful prayer you can pray together is simply:
“Lord, help us love each other well.”
That's enough to begin.
Because marriage needs God's help in the places where our own strength falls short.
We need patience when we're frustrated.
We need wisdom when we're making decisions.
We need grace when we've been hurt.
We need humility when we're wrong.
We need strength when life feels overwhelming.
And we need God's help to keep choosing love when loving well isn't easy.
Praying together also creates a reminder that you're not facing life alone. You're inviting God into your conversations, decisions, struggles, dreams, and future.
Don't worry about making prayer perfect.
Start with five minutes.
Hold hands.
Thank God for one thing.
Ask Him to help you with one struggle.
Pray for your children.
Pray for each other's hearts.
And if all you can say is, “Lord, help us love each other well,” say that.
Over time, simple prayers can become deeper conversations with God and with each other.
Your marriage doesn't need a perfect prayer life overnight.
It needs a willing heart that keeps turning toward God together.
So tonight, don't overthink it.
Take your spouse's hand.
Close your eyes.
And start simply.
“Lord, help us love each other well.”
