Parenting is one of the greatest responsibilities a couple can share. Your children need your time, attention, guidance, and love. But in the middle of school schedules, homework, activities, discipline, responsibilities, and everyday life, it can become easy to put your marriage on the back burner.
You can become so focused on being good parents that you slowly stop being good spouses.
Your children are important, but your marriage matters too.
A healthy marriage creates a strong foundation for the family. Your children benefit from seeing two people who communicate, respect one another, make time for each other, and continue choosing each other through every season of life.
Being intentional about your marriage doesn't mean you're neglecting your children. It means you're strengthening the relationship that helps hold your family together.
MAKE TIME FOR YOUR MARRIAGE
You don't always need an expensive date night or a weekend getaway. Sometimes it's simply sitting together after the kids go to bed, having a meaningful conversation, sharing a meal, or taking a walk together.
Small moments of connection can keep your relationship from becoming only about parenting.
REMEMBER WHO YOU WERE BEFORE YOU BECAME PARENTS
You were husband and wife before you became Mom and Dad.
Don't let your identities as parents completely replace your identity as a couple. Continue learning about each other, laughing together, dreaming together, and creating memories that belong to the two of you.
DON'T ONLY TALK ABOUT THE CHILDREN
When every conversation becomes about schedules, school, finances, behavior, and responsibilities, your relationship can begin to feel more like a partnership in parenting than a marriage.
Ask each other:
How are you really doing?
What are you looking forward to?
What do you need from me?
Sometimes your spouse doesn't need another solution. They simply need to know that you still see them.
YOUR MARRIAGE NEEDS ATTENTION TOO
Children grow up. Seasons change. The house eventually becomes quieter. When that happens, you don't want to look across the room and realize that you spent years being excellent parents but forgot how to be connected spouses.
Love your children deeply.
Show up for them.
Give them your best.
But don't forget to give your marriage your best too.
Be good parents. Be intentional spouses. And keep choosing each other along the way.
