Many couples say they have a God-centered marriage, but is God truly at the center—or has He become the third priority?
A healthy Christian marriage is not simply about two people who love each other and occasionally invite God into their decisions. It's about two individuals who intentionally build their relationship around Him.
When God becomes third in a marriage, other things often take His place. Work, children, finances, personal ambitions, and even the desire to please one another can become more important than seeking God's direction.
And that's where the problem begins.
When God is not at the center, couples may begin relying only on their own understanding. Disagreements turn into battles over who is right. Forgiveness becomes harder. Communication breaks down, and the marriage can slowly become more about individual needs than shared purpose.
Ecclesiastes 4:12 reminds us that a cord of three strands is not quickly broken. This beautiful picture reminds us that a marriage strengthened by God's presence has a foundation beyond human feelings and abilities.
Putting God first doesn't mean your marriage will never face challenges. It means you have a shared foundation to turn to when challenges come. It means praying together, seeking wisdom through Scripture, extending grace, practicing forgiveness, and allowing God to shape how you love one another.
Your spouse should not have to compete with your relationship with God. Instead, your relationship with God should influence how you treat, honor, serve, and love your spouse.
God was never meant to be an occasional guest in your marriage. He was meant to be at the center of it.
